Transcript of Introductory Video for the Optimal Aging Competency

Optimal aging. How do we promote optimal aging?

Narrator opens a large box filled with items that promote optimal aging.   I've brought my optimal aging kit here. So let's see what strategies we have for promoting physical and mental function and engagement with life.
Disease prevention strategy: A syringe to remind us about pneumonia vaccine, flu vaccine, tetanus shots -- keeping those up to date. Narrator brings a syringe from the optimal aging kit.
Narrator does biceps curls with a 5-pound weight while holding her exercise shoes in her other hand.  


Here's a risk reduction, health promotion strategy.

Exercise! Strength, endurance, balance, flexibility -- all benefits of different forms of exercise for older adults, no matter what their disease processes or the physical condition in which they begin. 

Some of you may be looking at my weight and thinking, "That's far too heavy for many older adults I know."  Narrator does biceps curls with a stapler.   How about a useful, handy household item like a stapler, as a place to begin?
In addition to exercise we have, of course, nutrition strategies. You'll find some of those in your learning activities. Narrator holds broccoli, orange, and banana.   And hydration is a hugely important issue for many older adults, due to physiological changes of aging.    Narrator extracts a bottle of drinking water from the optimal aging kit.



What do we have in here to promote mental function? A book, some music, a reminder about the importance of humor.   Narrator holds up a book and some recorded music.              

 And now let's look at engagement with life.                       

Narrator holds photographs of family members.  

When we think of engagement with life the first thing we usually think of is engagement with people, people of all ages. 







Narrator brings binoculars, a garden tool, and a green plant from the optimal aging kit.



In addition to engagement with people, another aspect of optimal aging may be engagement with the natural world, some form of meaningful activity that helps people stay engaged rather than become isolated.

There are other items in my kit, but now it's time for you to explore your learning activities, right after this short quotation from Alfred, Lord Tennyson:
