Here is the Older Adult Competency that you will demonstrate:

Plan, implement, and evaluate care that assists older adults and their families/caregivers to meet personal goals, express preferences, maximize function, maintain desired level of autonomy and independence, and live in their chosen environment.

Here are components that help build this Maximizing Function competency:

  • Assess older adults' living environment and suggest adaptations to optimize person-environment fit, with special awareness of functional, physical, cognitive, psychological, and social changes common in old age.
  • Assess family/caregiver knowledge of skills necessary to deliver care to older adults.
  • Involve, educate, and/or supervise families/caregivers and assistive personnel in implementing best practices for older adults.
  • Create individualized approaches for behaviors such as falls, treatment interference, and other behavioral symptoms to prevent inappropriate use of physical restraints and psychoactive medications.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to increase adherence with therapeutic regimens.
  • Find community resources to assist older adults and their families to meet personal goals, maximize function, maintain desired level of independence, and live in their chosen environment.
  • Facilitate adjustment of older adults and families/caregivers to new living arrangements.
